+1 on documentation. But do not create an entrance barrier to participate.
So maybe have a wiki for doc wwith a predefined structure setup.

The crius board thread at rcg has a god tutorial for starters.

I'd rather you/we include the entire user community into this effort from the start - else our workload increases even more. And it is to their benefit at least as much as to ours, so let them participate and do some of the work :)

Prior to that we should decide on a mechanism (wiki, where, how to access, etc.), set it up, and then declare it open.
Imho,
- any decent wiki will do,
- have it under authority of one of the known long time supporters of the project,
- no access limit ( registration required to edit?)

What do you think?

I think we should have this documentation on the multiwii.com wiki so that it is the first thing people come to. The info there, although still quite relevant is now a little out dated and certainly full of omissions due to the rate of development over the last year or two.

I will gladly help write and edit.

I would be a little concerned about having access too open. We have unfortunately attracted a community of immature rabbit users that I wouldn't put it past to deface and ruin our documentation.

I put up a wiki about an hour ago where every one can contribute. Talking with Alex to transfer it to multiwii.com.
You can already participate on http://wiki.devbase.be

Hi,

As I'm not all all "wiki fluent",
I would like to have some advice of wiki experimented users:
- what do you think about the googlecode wiki system ?
- Is it complicated to use regarding other systems ?

I'm ready to move the whole information currently on multiwii.com to a wiki in order to have a sort of "entropic" documentation, but I want to be sure to select a good system before.
(I can setup what I want on multiwii.com, no restriction on php)

the google wiki does require registration to edit? Keep the entry barrier low, so more people can participate. Obviously we the reigstered developers are not that good in writing documentation (ok, got other things on our minds)
I prefer we start a trial without registration for editing. If wiki has versioning and allows rollback, possilbe damage through vandals is limited.
Cannot go wrong with wikipedia's mediawiki? A beast to tame and oversized for our small task?
Let's compile requirements:
- easy include of pictures and videos embedded in text
- auotmatic page index
- access control but optional
- versioning

Okay look.

The Wiki system on my server now is MediaWiki. One of the biggest open source wikisystems available.. You can do anything with it what you mentioned above. The system is very clear. Uses it's own EASY formatting language. Only registered users can edit. I think that's better because people that want to edit pages for vandalism won't try to register.. which gives a lower chance do do rollbacks.

I already added some stuff on the wiki. Still much more to add. IF you want to use the system I could simple export the database & give you the setup files. So Alex can host it on Multiwii.com

What do you think?

- you must manually granted each user
- each changed file count as a svn revision
- there is no front page
- less "nice looking" than the average wiki

the MediaWiki proposed by jessestr is perfectly ok ,but i prefer having the documentation hosted at multiwii

You can see a preview there.. It's installed.

Apparently Alex just took the logo on the left top from my wiki without asking + content?
Alex didn't take my database with info so all the info on the main page is also copied from the wiki.

All the info you guys have submitted was done for nothing unless you stay at my wiki. And for Alex.. I do not tolerate this copycat stuff.
This won't be without consequences.

Sorry

Man, I don't understand your reaction.
I took me some hours to install wikimedia on multiwii.com
I put up a wiki about an hour ago where every one can contribute. Talking with Alex to transfer it to multiwii.com.

And some days later I tried to set up things as I can with a logo and an example of the main page. I thought some copy/paste could do the job easily.
and then
Alex from MultiWii has set up a new wiki on his server without asking permission to take all the info of this wiki.

I have no problem that you take the info at all. Copying withou asking the files.. I've messaged you. But didn't answer on the database stuff. No copy paste. I will give you the database with pleasure if uou want. I don't want to do half work. Will take too much time.

And you can use the logo if you just have asked me... Message me for the database, with users & all the info on the pages.

It's just not nice what you did there. And hours to install MediaWiki? The setup takes 10 minutes maximum

Anyways, I still want to help you but the right way. Pm me

I didn't copy anything. Other users did. Anyways I offered Alex my database full of information. Still offering it. But without answering and just coying everything is not the way it should go. I will give him my database tomorrow. He can use it, no problem. I'm not mad. It's just without letting me know anything.. Copy some stuff.

Conclusion, I'll help Alex,to do it the right way. No problem

Jesse,
Your actions and reactions are baffling.
You wanted the wiki to be moved so Alex copied what was neccessary.
To make it clear. The content I entered is mine and you are forbidden to do anything with it beyond displaying it for free.

First of all. I didn't copy anything. If you want to know who posted the stuff, look at the contributions and talk the person himself.
Second of all I offered Alex my help. He didn't take it so he shouldn't just copy-paste everything behind my back. I've been webdeveloping for more than 6 years and I have much experience with people that copy/steal content or designs.
I never ever said I wasn't going to help Alex anymore. You would understand me if you have had website's yourself. This is very clear to me, everyone can use the information, copy or what else if he asks it. And yes I told Alex he may have the info but not on this way, sorry. As I said, I'll give him the database when he contacts me.

I started the wiki and I will bring it to a good end, so don't make problems about it.

I'm not mad or anything at someone. I'm trying to help, not to do bad ;)

jessestr,

You want to help but aren't you being to picky about the way you do it? It's your way or no way at all regarding the information others contributed to the wiki?

Imagine that Alex or any programmer did the same with the MultiWii code? Only put in features that he/she wants without take in account what others want/need? Open projects don't work well with totalitarianism and rush unilateral decisions, it's about compromise between all and good sense. That's what makes a community, everybody can be listened to and contribute in a way or another.

MultiWii already had a logo and you created a new one. Alex used your logo in the new wiki as your contribution to the project when he just had to use the original MultiWii logo. Do you think you are doing any favor to the project with this

"Alex from MultiWii has set up a new wiki on his server without asking permission to take all the info of this wiki. Also he just copied the logo. Every contribution will be useless if you leave this wiki. Please do not tolerate his actions."

on the wiki you are trying to contribute to the project? Don't you think we already know Alex enough to understand he didn't mean no arm when he got the information? Maybe there was some misunderstanding between you and him but force the him to use your database is a bit strange like if you want him to forever owe you something.

I intend to contribute to the wiki documentation on way or another but I will do it on the official domain wiki even if there is no other information there. I appreciate your effort but don't like the way you are trying to force things. First the petition and now this confusion regarding information you don't own or contributed.

Regards,
Luis Sismeiro

The database is on my server. It stays my property and yes there is/was misunderstanding between Alex & me. So not between you, Alex and me. I don't care where you will contribute to, and I don't care about your opinion either. It's either taking the database with information already or no database. I put much effort into this.

Everything is already exported to a zip file for Alex ;) Now, do something useful instead of making this a huge problem. It was just a signal to Alex that he didn't listen to me at all. I tried to help this project with documentation.
