Wiicopter Cyborg.

Post by copterrichie »

I went to the field this morning, to test my new FPV configuration utilizing a small LCD monitor connected to my grab and go bag. I was quite surprised, it wasn't as difficult as I thought it was going to be flying and viewing the monitor. I was able to momentarily look at the monitor, and maintain visual contact with the flying aircraft fairly easy. I noted a few modifications to incorporate into the OSD and eye movement techniques to assure safe flying. Because of the arrow shape of my sweptback copter design, it makes it easy to point the camera in the right direction however getting the framing perfect is a challenge. Being able to look momentarily into this monitor will aid in this task.

I modified an old pair of glasses with a magnifying lens making the monitor viewable close up. Once I have perfected this setup, I will pay a visit to an optometrist and have them make me a single bifocal lens especially for this FPV configuration.

The present monitor is a JXD318 and is junk in my opinion. I had hoped to use it for recording the live downstream but the OSD caused the picture quality to deteriorate. I have later learned how to tune the FPV transmitter making it usable to display the video feed from the copter. Based upon today's test results, I have placed an order for a 2.5" monitor used normally for rear viewing in automobiles.

I did some follow-up testing this morning and it dawn upon me, the act of looking momentarily at the monitor is no different than looking in the rear-view mirror while drive. We do it all the time subconsciously all the time. I need to workout a few bugs of being in direct sunlight, right now, I stand in shaded area which works very well however, I may not always have that luxury. It also came to me that this method should be AMA compliant with their requirement to have visual contact with the aircraft at all times. :)
