Ext Mag should be compulsory!!

Post by brewski »

After finding out the hard way that there is no easy way to totally eliminate magnetic disturbance to an FC with onboard mag I went with the ext mag board with my Crius AIOP V2. This was easy for me as board designers had already seen what APM 2.6 had done & provided pads that can be cut to disconnect the Mag chip.
So many of new users are now finding out the hard way that their FCs are next to useless using the onboard Mag.
Someone should develop a MW board without Mag chip & provide Ext Mag board (or Mag combined GPS ) as options.
This would make for a much better user experience with Multiwii.

Agree. DJI figured this out a while back.

This is how to do it properly... You can have sensor on board or remote....

That's why autoquad flies circles around any multiwii/dji garbage and has onboard mag, RIGHT?

Hmm my 450 is perfectly happy with the mag built into the apm board.

Of course it did mean actually thinking about the placement of everything.

It can be done but most people can't be bothered

What you mean is autoquad calibration and code design is superior? It certainly seems to be....

For multiwii etc. probably depends on your copter layout, how much it draws and requirements....

I can see my heading data change under throttle load - I couldn't film a yaw free smooth powered climb until moved to the remote mag. Its probably pulling 75A-100A....

being practical - normal LOS/FPV etc I don't care if its 0 or 20 degrees out......

IMO, it all comes down to how the main power-lines are routed.

I tried twisting wires & even screened cable & moving FC up 30mm but still up to 20degrees shift with full throttle. With ext mag on mast out front not even 1 degree shift & with white foam on end I have great orientation.

sort of .. cause it is not always possible , doable or manageable to do so without changing the tradoff betwenn [insert x]..

Ext Mag is compulsory for those who fit that category [insert XY]. also not a big deal when free pins (thanks to ppm and or stm32)
