Hi!
I am thinking of embedding a gsm/gprs modem on a multiwii multicopter.
The idea is to use a modem such as this one:

Hardware and software interface should be easy, as a a lot of similar applications have already been developped on arduino system.
Some useful applications can be implemented:
- automatic sent of a sms including GPS coordinates in case of failsafe mode triggered.
- Telemetry over IP (through GPRS connection) : (however we can't expect this to be real time datas).
- regular update of the last known GPS location on a cloud service in order to live-update a map of route followed.
- When a specific formated SMS is received, the multicopter answer with its position...
Imagination is the limit...
I have a major concern though: What about possible interferences with the electronics and or the radio signal ?
Do you have experience about that ?
GSM/GPRS interfacing
Re: GSM/GPRS interfacing
Swit h your phone to old gsm only mode and bring it close to tx and/or rx and flight controller.
You may find out about interference.

Hey,
How did your experiment go?
I am pretty interested in it as well and am thrilled to see this in the wild.
At least it doesn’t seem impossible, as there seem to be stock parts for this idea at least for APM http://www.unmannedtechshop.co.uk/dronecell-gsm-telemetry/ So Multiwii should be able to handle this.
Cheers,
Hendrik
