I dont think there is a definative answer to that question. I was reading from someone who is well up on this multiwii phenomena (wish I could remember his name) and he stated that it came down to the luck of the draw. He had some IMU's that cost him a lot and they were trouble, some that were cheap as chips and they worked flawlessly, and were as good the expensive ones that worked. Really it all boils down to are you prepared to spend a lot on one item that should work or buy a few cheap ones that might work. The real problem is that there are just too many variables to state that xyz are the best, think of it as a car and everyone will have a different opinion of make and model.

I know this doesnt really answer you question but it might give you an idea of how hard the question might be to answer.

stay away from L3G4200D ADXL based IMUs - they are currently a pain in the butt to tune and the code is not mature.

Look for either ITG3200 or ITG3205 or MPU6050 imho these are currently the best option and fly very well on default PIDs.

Search 10 dof on ebay and you'll find some really nice cheap boards.

Crius SE from goodluckbuy is a really nice board. http://www.goodluckbuy.com/mwc-multiwii ... kout-.html

There's also a Lite version with only gyro+acc...which is enough for most applications as well.

Got it..works fine. http://www.youtube.com/user/JustasM ...some first test flights here.
