Calibration, how and what? Hope someone even looks at this..

Post by jessestr »

Alright. Already made two topics about my quadcopter but nobody cares I guess. So I'm just going to ask what I have to do since I didn't really ask how and what..

I finally got my quadcopter ready.. well battery isn't arrived yet but ok.. First things first: the setup

- Motors: Suppo 2012/13
- ESC: Suppo 25A
- Original WM+ as Gyroscope
- BMA020 as Accelerometer
- Flyduino Pro Mini (5V) .. Just a black Arduino Pro Mini

Second part, I did some tests

1. I uploaded the 1.9 software, but it didn't read the gyro somehow.. it is an original WM+..
2. I uploaded the 1.8p2 software and then he read both gyro & accel.. Sounds good..
3. Then I started testing without propellers, set minthrottle to 1300 and when I powerup motors everythings fine..
4. I raised the throttle and started moving the quad to test the accelerometer. He did fine.. When I lowered the front the back motors were going slower and the fronts faster.
5. I raised the throttle to half way and then shaked the quad in all directions.. and the quad started to doing weird things..
6. I attached only 2 props putted it on a box and started to raise the throttle. Didn't had any decent table to test it.. I'm working on a testingbed..

the beeps is just from the battery alarm

You might wonder what did the quad do then? It started to shake, and some motors were going harder when they shouldn't go harder, some didn't even spin anymore, esc's fell out and much more.

Also the tests were done with a 800mAh 9.6V NiMH battery, could it just be the battery that couldn't handle everything (the battery was out in like 1.5 minute..), also the leds were fading away so it could be just the battery? I don't know.. I'm guessing and asking you guys!

I didn't do these:
- Calbration
- Didn't set ESC timing to high

Simply because I don't know how and what..., what do I have to calibrate? How do I have to calibrate it? I only tried to calibrate the esc's throttle without and Y-cable.. because I don't have those, is there any other option?

Goals:
- Calibrate..
- Get 1.9 working (Alex please? why isn't the WM+ working on 1.9 with the BMA020)
- Make sure every sensor does his job so I can fly..

Last and maybe important thing..
I joined the forum after I made my quad and now I started reading that there are problems with the BMA020 such as drift etc.. Can someone tell me what's fixed or what's still wrong? I'm new, but I guess you already know that..

Sorry for my broken English, I come from Belgium. I do my best :)

Thanks for helping me!

Gyro calibration occurs at each power up, but can also be performed manually. ACC calibration must be done manually. Instructions for the manual calibration procedures are in the FAQ in the section titled "Operating the multicopter."

Aha okay. Thanks. What about the PID settings? For a beginner like me what should I take. I want to take off stable since I can't fly yet..

Start with the default settings and modify them as required by YOUR model and YOUR personal flying style. General PID tuning information is discussed here:

Thank you :) ! I'll need this when I get 1.9 working.
