Why use the ATMEGA32?

Post by saomebodyelse »

Just a basic question, hopefully it generates some discussion.

Why is multiwii based on the ATMEGA32u MCU? I am curious as to which board is best for me to start with for making my own flight controller. I am wondering what stands in the way of doing everything you guys are doing but for me to do it on a beaglebone black. To me it seems like an obvious tech advantage to start with beaglebone black, but there are so many ATmega flight controllers I'm thinking I'm missing something basic.

Maybe the aditional horsepower of BBB doesn't matter because the duties of a FC arent that taxing?
The added tech of BBB means slower reaction times from sensors to motors?
Ease/Dificulty of one over the other?

Can some one help me understand why I don't see more Beaglebones in the air? advantages or disadvantages over staying with a Microcontoller solution, Atmel8 or Atmel32? Please help.
