Best way to share files?

Post by Alexinparis »

As some of you may know, It is no more possible to host new binary files in a googlecode repository.
It was very convenient to share intermediate release and stable release.

Hopefully, googlecode main feature remains.
It’s still possible to handle and share code source files like it was since the beginning and there is no plan to change that.

However, there are some binaries files that deserve to be shared, for instance multiwiiconf gui exe. And it is no more possible to use google code for this.

Some facts: 2.3 version was downloaded 100 000 times during 1 year.
So around 1TB traffic during one year just for this version.

Google advice is to move those files to a googledrive account.
Some other ideas:
Free hosting files system
Collaborative sharing file systems like torrent
A dedicated repository somewhere

I think we can continue to include binaries and images etc. in the repository section.
It is the dedicated downloads section which gets terminated. Bad enough.

For same googlecode reason I had to move hosting of the pre-compiled downloads for MWOSD elsewhere.

This is what it looks like on googlecode now....

Seems to work and is no real overhead.

I have no concrete evidence, just the chatter on G+, Google will drop the googlecode at some point in the future. Again, this is just chatter.

Thank you shikra for this example.
The result is quite ok.

I chose to remove totally the download tab and add a download section in the main page.
each link points to files in a google drive account

I get the feeling new user have hard to find the firmwares.

Can you create a Downloads Subsection under Software in the forumview?
And add a sticky thread with link to https://code.google.com/p/multiwii/
