Not getting any answers to simple serial port brd. questions

Post by n8lbv »

And I've been asking for about 2 months now.
I get a lot of speculation but have not seen any real help yet from anyone who actually knows how the serial port
on a single port multiwii board works and how to make it work with GPS or satellite receivers.

Is this stuff a secret? or do I need to ask one of the software authors directly?
What am I doing wrong to NOT be able to obtain some of this simple information?

I've asked a number of times and in my last thread I thought I was very direct and simple about it but still "nobody really knows" .........

Sadness!

I've been patient, understanding yet still need to know.
Am I in the wrong place?

Here are *some* threads where I have asked about this:

i assume your are using a 328p .

shorst answer ->Your best option is to get a controller with an Atmega 2560, that one got 4 serial ports OR to get a i2c adapater.

setting up a gps with a 328p is way harder and prone to failure than using a Atmega 2560 or a stm32 flight controler

https://www.google.fr/search?q=i2c+gps+adapter+multiwii

all those point are discussed in the links you posted

Thanks I appreciate the help but this is not really an answer.
Paraphrasing it's saying
"I have no idea how to do it on a simpler board and it is harder or more work. It's easier to do on one of the better boards with multiple serial ports, everyone else is doing it this way."

Um yes, but I'd like to at least try and learn and have some fun on the single port boards.

Plus listen to me please: THEY SELL THE 328P with a sat RX connector! This means I should be able to use it with a sat RX but don;t know how to
How do you look at the values in config and set them if the serial port is being used for the Sat. RX?
There's got to be a way to do this but nobody's been able to explain how you do it.
Same with GPS. I should be able to use it or at least try.

I DONT NEED the single serial port for setup/config once it has all been done!!
It makes sense that now the port could be freed up for GPS.

Know what I mean?

I'd like to play & experiment with what I already have.
And i have a serial GPS.
Why not give it a try?
I'd like to but need a little help.

For the sat RX, you have to keep flashing back and forth (with the sat definition commented in/out), otherwise the sat rx data requests will interfere randomly with the reading and writing of values in multiwiiconf. To be sure the TX is set up right, you have to use an i2c display.
I'm fairly sure the same applies for GPS. You don't deactivate the config anywhere in the config.h. I'm not going to bother ripping apart my setup just to try this out, but the real question is, why don't you, if you apparently have all the stuff there?
By the time you wrote all these postings, you could've easily hooked it all up and see if it works.

Thanks and this is the first time ANYONE has answered with even a little bit of detail (still not definite) i was looking for :steps: do this do that, turn this off because if you dont...blah.
That would be nice but I understand if nobody here really knows because they haven't done that (I didn't know this).
I'd expect the code has to be worked in different ways sections turned on/off etc. depending on how the port's being used.
I don't have an i2c display. The 328P is sold with the sat. port being a feature and no mention of *needing* an I2C display connected in order to use it.
I don't expect you to tear yours apart C'mon man be reasonable.
But I wanted to have an idea on what I'm doing with mine before just randomly hooking things up which I'm sure are not going to work be default, the code will need to be adjusted.
I was really hoping for some help and understanding of that here.
Mine is already torn apart and in pieces on the bench.

Technically, you don't need the display. Technically, you can experiment with your transmitter until you happen to find the settings that work. It just takes forever, and the display costs like 10 bucks off ebay.
One thing you need to realize is that most companies that build and sell multiwii boards don't know shit about the actual software.. they merely see "supports sat RX" and figure they might push sales by sticking a 20 cent connector on there.

Hey! > no need to be a jerk!
You're kinda quick to call someone a lazy ass.
Why did you do that?
I've been working on this spending hours for 2 months and I expect to spend a lot more time & effort on this
just for fun and because I really enjoy working doing and trying new things.

I'm not afraid to work my ass off and this stuff is worth it.
I'd just like to know as much as I can about what I'm doing as I go.
It sucks being in the dark on things.
My experience with people who are quick to judge like this have quite a piece of the very issue they are judging on themselves.
Aside from that uselessness,
Thanks for the help it's much appreciated.

You're still being a total jerk.
I've seen this page before many times.

1. It's outdated.
(really outdated).

2. It does not describe anything I asked about, what each specific define is for and how they work.
3. It does not describe how to hook up the RX and setup/monitor/test endpoints ranges etc. and then toggle back.
4. It does not explain how to put the sat. rx in bind mode vs. operation mode.
5. It does not cover different types of sats. DSMX11ms DSMX22ms DSM2--

Don't be a dick.
I'm not looking for a copy & paste old solution that anyone can find on google.
I'm looking to better understand Multiwii and know what I'm doing and how it works.

As you may have been bable to conclud : i am not rely that impacted by you thinking of me as a jerk

You might also been able to conclud that you want to have your rx working first. Once your rx is working then add your gps over i2c.

Go to section : HowTo set your RX with multiwii.

here is the specfic line of interest : https://github.com/multiwii/multiwii-fi ... fig.h#L363

//#define RX_SERIAL_PORT 1 // Forced to 0 on Pro Mini and single serial boards;

:)

One thing that could really help is to learn how those #define work in C , this way you will not have to rely on people outdated blog post .

Thanks for trying help.
I am figuring it out.
If the software is capable of flying GPS hold using a single serial port I will make it work.
If I get stuck in the code or truly can't tell what is or is not supported I'll ask an experienced developer.
