Forum Update
Forum Update
Hi all-
Has anybody (Alex) ever considered updating the MultiWill forum? While the current version serves it purpose reasonably well, it would be nice (IMHO) to update the present forum to a more modern/'popular' CMS software platform. What do you guys think?
-Thanks

This one would be interesting and stand to enlarge the community.

Re: Forum Update
Signs of the time Ham, there is no place the hide anymore and sites that try to avoid this, sooner or later, go under.

Re: Forum Update
I too have thought that the forums really needs a facelift.
Multiwii has grown into a serious community and the website should be a little more community based (IMHO)
Something like Joomla
With Community Builder, Users could have powerful profiles to upload photos and videos, or even a blog on their build
If you add CBSubs you could also allow more loyal members to donate a fee per year, which could give them a badge on the forums and profile to show they are a supporter, which in turn could help those paying members get added help or attention..
Software releases or dev news could be posted to the front page, ect.
I like the site but wish it had more community features, such as rcgroups or diydrones.
I mean one feature that would be good to have a simpler youtube embeder (built in button)
I do webpages and could help..If your ever interested or have questions or think I might help with anything feel free to give me a shout.

Re: Forum Update
+1 for the embedded videos
Re: Forum Update
phpbb forum does not have any youtube plug ins for easy capabilities by their users.
copterrichie google "phpbb bbcode youtube embed" It should come up with the required code to embed youtube and other video website videos..

Re: Forum Update
The nerve of some under 10 post posters. Last week it was ‘let’s move the software depository’ now this.
You come into Alex’s house (this forum) eat at his table (download free software) and then ask him to move because you don’t like the house he built.
Wow. I wonder what the real problem is, won’t this forum open on your iThingy?

Sorry the discussion plugs your nerve... No one is complaining here, only making valid suggestions because we want to see the community grow. I tried to offer valid suggestions, even some services to help build the site, As I can understand Alex is a busy guy, and probably doesnt want to use his time to code on a website. Even put up the suggestion to offer a pay subscription service to help him raise money to continue his project...RCGroups does it and it only offers a forum full of Ads...There are multiwii users on multiple forums, which shows that some people just like the functions/looks of the other forums. I would like to hope that creating a more feature rich site it would pull them back in to where they should be, on here. With a little bit of user level control there could even be some restricted areas to separate sections, so that programers have a private forum to share valid code suggestions and changes without 100 newbie posts asking about it as they are working on it.
Again the forum serves the purpose and function as it should. A Geo metro will get you from point A to B and Im sure you drive around in something nicer.
The number of posts doesnt neccessarily say a lot about the user. 1000 posts of "Thats cool" doesnt mean your valuable community member, Just saying, its not directed at anyone. I have read the forums for over year now and generally dont chime in unless I have really have something worth while to say.

Wayne,
I'll have you know that post count does not necessarily reflect members as any lesser of a member of this community. I was thinking a more modern and popular CMS wold attract and retain more people to the MultiWii forum. It's nice to be able to go to an active forum of like minded people with the same interest and goals as it seems to cut down on the strife that you encounter at other multi discipline forums. I guess one example: I have been around since we were cracking open those confounded WM+ and WNk, yet I don't spend much time here due to my original question. Anyways, thanks again Alex (and all others) for working so hard for our enjoyment and creating this community. It's a shame that more people have not donated to you.

We can do better than this...lolz

Hi,
I updated 2 days ago the forum. I think 100% of users didn't notice

phpBB 3.0.8 -> phpBB 2.0.11
This is one of the invisible tasks needed to maintain updated this modest web place.
Among other tasks: maintain the wordpress main site updated, delete spams, look at the web hosting news, domain name to pay/refresh, ...
In fact this is not a lot of work and this site costs nearly nothing. I can do some adjustments/add modules but I don't plan to move toward something that would require more work. I could share the administrative task with someone, but I rather not.
The purpose of the forum is to establish a place to discuss mainly about multiwii software and variants, not really to raise a community.
I'm aware it could be more considering the site audience.
Just for information, I setup a revolvermap counter some times ago.

Re: Forum Update
LOL, I recall this same argument about the Wii copter being ported to the Mega. Alex, this project is much bigger than anyone could have dreamt.
Re: Forum Update
Thank you for your input Alex....
I do community based websites so I know how much work it can be...I also have a lot of subscriptions of web based software companies, ie, Community Builder, CBSubs, RocketThemes and a bunch more. I would love to have a site with as many members as you have in my portfolio. If you ever reconsider changing the site up and would like someone to do it or help, please let me know. I could build you a sample site on my server.
You say the site isnt here to raise a community, I say, its too late....lol...your software has a large following and a lot of contributors...
I thank you for your hard work on a site for us to discuss on and your excellent Multiwii software.
