OK, so is testing the telemetry, video and the radio system for FPV as simple as hooking everything up and having someone drive away with your copter or plane while periodically running the motors till you find the weak link?
Maybe someone with bunches of experience could just run through a few ideas or methods they have used to check the capability of their system.
I'm getting things working pretty well and am looking at flying further away but do not want to find out the capability of my equipment by seeing how far I can fly before I crash.

definitely, a must. some radio's have a servo test mode, so that you can program a channel to sweep a servo back and forth while doing your test. also keep in mind a car may cause interference, so you may want to actually get out of the car once you run out of range to see if you can go further.
