Oculus Rift for FPV?

Post by Sebbi »

Many of you might have read about the new gaming glasses with one big screen in front of some optics. Well dev kits are now on Kickstarter:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/152 ... o-the-game

Could this be used in FPV scenarios? The FOV is 110° ... which is ... well ... incredible. You could:

1) find some analog to dvi converter and try to use it that way
2) have a computer or Raspberry Pi (if powerful enough) in the middle to do the conversion and
2a) convert it so it looks 2D with OSD (from the groundstation) either in the middle or placed at the front of your model so only viewable if you are looking forward (like a read HUD)
2b) when used with a GoPro or other cam with high FOV, adjust the picture with headtracking and only look at a portion of the full image
2c) use 2 cameras for 3D ... not that useful in great heights, but fun near the ground ;-)
3) (far future) transmit signal via wireless hdmi ... probably too expensive if ranges over 30m are desired :/

Your thoughts?

I saw this, it looks good. But it is essentially what some FPVers have done already, a DIY screen.

1 high res LCD 2 lenses to focus at short distance, box.

Less than ideal for 2D work as the LCD would have to show the same image on both halves. Showing a single 2D image would look odd (because the thing is designed for 3D). In 2D you would get left eye with left half of image and right eye with right half of image.

You can make a 2D version easily with sensible resolution.

Oh, if you want to SEE what it really looks like, not a render...

So you both think it's not ideal for FPV?

I understand you can't just simply show a 2D picture on there, but in theory it should be possible to make it look right. The resolution isn't too bad considering the analog signal from the copter/plane has a way lower resolution, so it should be possible to show the same picture (or positioned in some 3D space) to both eyes.

The only problems I see is that it might need a PC/Laptop in the loop and latency issues with the conversion to digital / 3D ... and it's shipping in december ;-)

It would work with a laptop in the middle. You could use the laptop to show the dual images of a 2D source required even.

OR you could use THIS camera
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160843238915

Which will give you the 3D sbs image required for the oculus rift, just use a capture card on a laptop and feed the oculus from that.

Not ideal for FPV, but it would work.

It has been some time, but I finally got the Rift development kit. Watching FPV videos on this thing is fantastic ... it's not 3D, but it is a completely different thing compared to regular FPV goggles ;-)

We'll see what people will come up with, but holy this feels unreal ... even with all the pixels clearly visible in this dev kit ;-)
