Battery capacity??

Post by skymike »

Guy,

I am having an issue with a battery. Issue as follows
Battery
Multistar lipo 5200 may 3s 10/20C
E calcs says I should be getting around 10 min flight time.
I get about 6.
When I charge battery it says it only charges up to 1600mah worth of charge.

I am using the thunder charger and it turns off saying batt is fully charged.

I do not understand. Shouldn't I be getting closer to 5200mah of usage?

Yes the battery should charge for, more or less, its capacity.
Some questions:
How you detect that it is discharged?
What is the voltage of the discharged battery?
How old is the battery?
did you ever run the battery "flat"? (fully discharged for example leaving it connected for long time)
Does your charger do the balancing?
Bye Marco

At first my quad would no longer lift off, and motors would turn slower than usual.
Now I have a battery voltage monitor. Noticed voltage was down at 3.18 per cell. (Way to low)
Battery was brand new turnigy multistar.
Charger does balance charge
I did successfully charge battery fully tonight. I found the charger was set to cut off at 1600mah for some reason. I thought I had previously set this to the battery full capacity.
After balance charging I noticed cell voltages were 4.18 / 4.19 / and 4.2 shouldn't they have been all the same since its a balance?
Did I ruin battery by only charging a little and discharging to low?

For what I know you can ruin the battery if they go below 3 V.
I have two batteries, one is 2.200 mA/h and another 3.300.
When the batteries are at 10.5 V ( 3 cells means 3.5 V each) they charges for the maximum capacity.
My batteries, fully charged are at 4.2 V like yours.
Try with another battery an see consumptions and charge total current, or try to charge your battery with another charger.
Bye Marco

Thanks.
Looks like I will be ok then as I have not gone below 3 volts.
I'll be sure to keep it up now. Not sure charger is bad its brand new thunder charger, just operator error at this point!
Going to check the cell voltage with a good Volt meter as I suspect the voltage alarm/monitor may be off a little. Figure this would be a good proof of the alarm readout anyways.
