y4 reptile flips over

Post by startupboy »

Have a nice un-fly-able y4.
It flips over to the right, sometimes forward, with no lift off.
Black multiwii pro ez 3.0, and Fly III 4 into 1 esc.
I have reset the board, and eprom, flashed the correct sketch, as supplied by Ready to fly quads.
Tried wingui 2.2, and 2.3.
Calibrated the transmitter with wingui.
Calibrated the esc with the transmitter, and with config h several times.
Checked the propellers(1045), and rebalanced.
I wait 10 sec before trying to lift off, no change.
The battery by design is forward on the quad, so it is front heavy.
Tried different size of battery, no change.
Maybe this quad is meant as a wall ornament

I dont usually check this sub-forum, sorry we missed your question for a few days...

First thing you need to verify is that all your props are spinning the correct direction, some people have problems with Y4's (and Y6's) cause they flip it upside down to work on the bottom motors and then they get it backwards, when you look at the motor layout ALL MOTORS SPIN THE DIRECTION SHOWS WHEN LOOKING DOWN FROM THE TOP.

It sounds [nearly for sure] that atleast one of your motors is spinning the wrong way. Do this- take off props, put a piece of scotch tape folded around the motor shaft and power up and apply throttle to verify which motors are spinning which way. You cant just use the prop you want, you have to make sure the motors are spinning the same way.

I have checked the rotation, the bottom propeller writing is facing up,
If i try to compensate with the control the quad almost lifts of
I get the felling that the motors are not spinning at the same speed.
I am waiting for a anti vibration mount, that should have been here today.
I will double check the motors tonight, and get back

Just checked propeller rotation with a servo checker, and it is ok

What does the tri icon look like in the GUI? Is it facing the correct direction and orientated the right way? If you're sure the motors and props are spinning correctly then most likely the gyro / sensors are getting confused and it's commanding it's self to flip over.

Have you verified all the axis' are orientated the right way? Both ACC roll and gyro roll move together (watching the raw data) and ACC pitch / gyro pitch and so on?

I don't know you and its not that I doubt your ability, but I really think it's gonna be something basic like prop / motor direction. Could you post a video of the props spinning? What you can do is not use a prop nut / not lock the props down, just put them on the motor shafts so they loosely turn. If you're sensor orientation defines are all correct (matching on each axis) I think we need to go back to prop / motor direction.

As far as my ability, its not the best, but I have 4 other quads that are flying (no multiwii).
I had the quad apart, and checked the hookups, and rotation.Installed a rubber mount for the controller.
Tomorrow if the weather is good,I will try it again. My motor spins like the mega y4 according to multiwii "connecting elements"
I hope it is something that I have backwards. Thanks for the help.
I'll be back

Ok..
I got it to fly,not the best, but it flew.
4s battery far forward might be to heavy. The ass end lifts up,and it wants to flip.
With a smaller 3s it flew.
I have no idea what I did wrong? Live, and learn

My y4 flies,sort off.
I arm the motors with switch A.
I add the other functions with switch B.
For some reason when I add the barometer the motors start spinning by themself slightly above idle.
I can only throttle up a little.
By removing the barometer in wingui, everything acts normal. I did remove the 15% failsafe on the throttle.
So, I wonder what the barometer is up to.

What BARO is it? Are you getting an i2C error count? Sounds now like you have some PID tuning to do, it should catch it's self and correct, not flip. Of course it's always best to have a perfectly balanced model but it shouldn't flip over just cause the battery is to heavy towards one side. Have the done the pre-flight, in-hand PID tuning setup where you tip it each way and feel it resist your movements?

i changed the motors thinking it was a vibration problem. No change
All the controls are working correctly with wingui.

As far as having the wrong arduino settings . Very possible.
It is set up for a Y4, with the correct board according to RTFQ

If the other settings are wrong, I am clueless. I don't know what to look for,or what modifications to do.
It feels like the gyros are not compensating.
I should post a short video.???
