I think we can get 12 Channels using the SPEKTRUM protocol right now. It would also be compatible with existing hardware. But the Greatest of all, the SPEKTRUM protocol is already working in the MWC.

Not sure if Tommy will mind us using this thread as a build log, so maybe we can create a new thread and GitHub repository for this project. I have this Simulator box I picked up on eBay for 10 bucks and a good starting point.
Another good choice for a starter is: http://www.hobbypartz.com/60p-dyu-1002.html

I´m going from scratch, or use my "old" (just converted it to 2.4Ghz) Futaba F14 that have lot´s of space inside and "pre cuts" for switches and pots.

You may already know but I did not. Here is how to flash Tommy's firmware from the commandline.
avrdude -F -v -pm328p -PCOM7 -b57600 -D -carduino -Uflash:w:"funkenschlag.hex":i (Change the comport to match your computer)

I wish! No, have just one, But I will try to find someone who want´s to sell me another one. Have this radio for... long time, and it was always my everyday radio. I know it´s a crime to do this kind of stuff to a vintage but...

Maybe we can open a business storing and upgrading vintage radio gear. Just won this bid on eBay for 16 bucks plus shipping. Not as great as your gear but much better than the gear I was going to use.

@copterrichie
it´s great, much better than the simulator one, not only for the box itself and LCD place, but for the most important, switches already in place and the quality of the potenciometers and pots, good analog parts give you precision values, that´s why radios like 9X are constantly with small oscilations and need codes like "dead zone" to go around!
EDIT: forgot to say that that was a top radio! top vintage

I opened the back of the fine outstanding radio and saw the quality parts and workmanship, well I can not HACK this guy. I located this FrSky upgrade and will be using the Simulator joysticks for the Tommy hack.

Here is a DIY transmitter underway over at RCG, No need in reinventing the wheel. All that is required is changing the PWM output to serial and we are home free.
