30A afroESC ,odd behavior on 4S in cold (-1C) conditions

Post by sanek »

hi All

im new to this forum , not so new to quad-copters thou ;)

setup

Sunnysky V2216 SII KV800 motors
afromESC 30A (clear tube) not sure what FW on them , thin default one. Will update to latest one on weekend.
latest MW FW on naze32 rev2
everything default with HORIZON mode on

3S - all starts and flies ok no sync errors , both indoors and outdoors.

4S - indoors (around +20C) no issue/or slight sync errors for first few seconds on 1/2 throttle
4S - outdoors (around -1C) on less than 1/3 throttle , lots of sync errors on all motors (red light blink fast) , quad is totally unstable and non-flyable, the FIX for this behavior is to grab is by hand , and do full throttle for ~15sec , ESC heat-up and not sync errors anymore. If quad not flying for like 2min , battery change for example , it again needs this heat-up procedure to fly again normally.

so now the question is this known behavior on 4S? any way to fix this?

Do these ESC's have a XTAL for the processor or does it just use its internal RC oscillator?
If the latter then the oscillator may not be properly oscillating or oscillating at a very wrong frequency.

I am pretty sure they have external orcilaror, not the internal rc.

I have somewhat similar issue. Same motors, same ESC. The paper label says 48/13. I presume that is week of production. Controller is naza v2.

Mines are fairly stable on takeoff and hover. But when I make a rapid maneuver the copter just flips and falls down.
For example, if I give it full yaw stick, and then rapidly release it, it just falls down when trying to stop spinning.

Not sure if it's a controller or ESC issue though. Flashed latest FW to afros today, will try flying tomorrow.

I had a similar issue with Afro 20A I bought last month, working fine under 3S, glitching under 4S before even taking off.
I didn't bother to investigate the firmware, if an ESCs cannot even run a motor with no load, it's worthless.
I just changed to other ESCs I had at hand.

just so ppl know
solved my problems with AfroESC
compiled with this firmware commit 1f75da384e5c83f83916aa752819ca6eed712565 , with enabled COMP_PWM , flies just awesome both on 3s and 4s.
