Mumetal magnetic shielding for multirotors

Hi Multiwii users,

We have a piece of 3M self-adhesive backed Mumetal foil/sheet for screening magnetic fields from power wiring. We have some leftover sections that are approx 10*10cm and are the ideal size for larger quad/hex/octocopters that have a central power distribution board that causes problems with the magnetometer readings.

For best performance, mount the mumetal shield as close to the source of magnetic fields as possible.

We fitted a shield of approx 10*10 cm in between the power distribution and the flight controller in a 3kg AUW quad that was suffering from power induced heading error, the heading was up to 30 degrees off sometimes under power in testing. Fitting the shield made a huge difference to the heading quality and the noticeable step changes in the raw X,Y,Z magnetometer data that occurred when arming/disarming the motors reduced a lot. Overall there is now less than a degree or two of error when facing the quad in any direction and giving half throttle with props on and tethered securely. In this setup the power distribution board is about 40mm below the magnetometer. The shield is about 7-8mm above the distribution board.

Magnetometer calibration must be repeated after fitting the shield since the mumetal will have changed the magnetic behaviour of the craft slightly.

Please PM me or reply to this thread if you are interested... Other sizes available on request....
Many thanks,
Ed
