I too tried to compile a v1.9 on arduino 1.0 and got the same error, so I went back to the arduino 0022 and it worked fine.

No idea at all indeed. One thing is that after recompiling only the win32 version is working propoerly. Win64 doesn't even if I'm with a win7 x64 & Java for 64bits installed. I must admit that as soon as it started to work in 1.8, I didnt investigate further... Just had to do it again with 1.9,...

I had similar problem. So I tried it with my friend's computer who also runs Windows 7 64 bit and it works on his!
You need to properly uninstall the old Java and choose the proper Java that matchs your internet surfer which is most likely the 32 bit if you use IE.
